Takedown records each match as its own video, with the scoring transcript attached, while you score.
Recording a match
- Before the first match, mount the iPad so the camera sees the whole mat. A tripod with an iPad mount, or a table stand at the scorer's table, means the scorer never has to hold the iPad or pan.
- In Scoring, tap the camera below the match clock. The camera view appears. The first time, Takedown asks for Camera, Microphone and Photos permission; tap OK for each.
- Tap the resolution label in the camera view to change it (480p, 720p, 1080p, and a higher option on iPads that support it). You can change resolution between matches, not during one.
- Score the match. Recording starts on its own when you start the clock in period 1 and stops when you tap Move On, which also saves the video to the iPad's Photos app.
The camera stays on for the next match. To turn video off, tap the X in the camera view.
Rules of recording
- Keep Takedown on screen. iOS stops any app's recording when it isn't the active app. Don't switch apps or lock the iPad during a match.
- Start Over discards the video for that match and starts a new one.
- There's no pause. If you tap the X mid-match and choose Stop Recording, that match's recording ends and can't be restarted.
- Maximum length. Settings > Video > Max Video Recording Duration stops a recording after 10 to 60 minutes (or never), which saves you from a forgotten camera filling the iPad after the last match.
- Audio. To record without sound, turn off Microphone for Takedown in the iPad's Settings > Apps > Takedown.
How much storage a match uses
Rough sizes for a six-minute high school match. Multiply by matches per Event.
| Resolution | Per match | 14-match dual meet |
|---|---|---|
| 480p | about 70 MB | about 1 GB |
| 720p | about 160 MB | about 2.2 GB |
| 1080p | about 360 MB | about 5 GB |
720p is plenty for review and sharing. Takedown warns you before an Event if the iPad is low on storage. See Managing iPad Storage for Video.
Where the video goes
Each match is saved to the iPad's Photos app, titled with the weight class, wrestlers, opponent, Event, result and date, for example 125 Jones, R v. Smith, J (Westview HS) W 8-6 12-18-26. It's a standard MP4 (H.264) file you can copy anywhere. The original stays only on the iPad that recorded it; upload it to YouTube to watch it on your other iPads and share it.
If the camera icon isn't in Scoring
- Your free trial has ended or your subscription doesn't include video. Settings > Takedown Store shows your status. See Takedown Says My Subscription Expired, But I Paid if you've paid.
- Takedown is running on a Mac, where video recording isn't available.
If you see Camera Not Available or Photos Not Available, grant the permission in the iPad's Settings > Apps > Takedown: Camera on, Microphone on, Photos set to Full Access.
