Takedown uploads match video to a YouTube channel you own. Set it up once, before the season, and it works for every Event.
1. Create a team Google Account
Make a free Google Account for the program, something like centralwrestlingvideo@gmail.com, and keep the password with the athletic department. A team account survives coach, parent and wrestler turnover. Don't use a coach's personal account, and don't spread video across more than one channel.
Google's steps: Create a Google Account.
2. Create the YouTube channel
A Google Account doesn't have a YouTube channel until you create one, and Takedown can't upload without it. Sign in to youtube.com with the team account and create the channel: Create a YouTube channel.
3. Verify the channel's phone number
In YouTube Studio, go to Settings > Channel > Feature eligibility and verify a phone number. This turns on Intermediate features, which Takedown needs to upload wrestler photos as video thumbnails. Google's steps: Get access to intermediate and advanced features.
4. Sign in from Takedown
- Tap My Team > Schedule, tap an Event, then Manage Video.
- Tap Sign In and choose the team Google Account.
- Google lists what Takedown is asking to do. Allow all of it. If anything is left unchecked, uploads and playback won't work and you'll need to sign out and sign in again.
Sign in on each iPad you upload from. Google asks you to confirm Takedown's access again from time to time; tap Agree.
5. Raise the daily upload limit before your first tournament
YouTube limits how many videos a channel can upload in 24 hours. A tournament can produce more matches than a new channel is allowed to upload in a day. The limit is higher once the channel has Advanced features: phone verification plus either enough channel history or a one-time ID or video verification, done in Settings > Channel > Feature eligibility. Google usually approves within 24 hours. Steps: Get access to intermediate and advanced features. Only the channel's primary owner can do this.
Settings worth knowing
All in Takedown's Settings > Video:
| Setting | What it does |
|---|---|
| Upload Wrestler Photo as YouTube Video Thumbnail | Uses the wrestler's roster photo as the video's thumbnail. Needs step 3. |
| Use Default Title, Description, Privacy for Upload | Takedown titles each video with weight class, wrestlers, Event date and result. Leave it on. |
| YouTube Privacy Setting for Uploaded Video | Leave it on Unlisted. Private breaks playback in Takedown, Takedown LIVE and sharing. Google requires us to offer the option. |
| Revoke YouTube Permissions | Disconnects Takedown from the channel. Sign in again to upload. |
| Delete YouTube API Data | Permanently removes Takedown's record of every uploaded video. Not reversible. Don't use it without emailing us first. |
